Description
In 1974, Carlo Ottolenghi commissioned Carlo Scarpa to build a new villa on Lake Garda, near the town of Bardolino. The lot occupied roughly 7,600 square meters and was partially covered by a vineyard and olive trees. To retain much of the existing landscape, the villa was sited near one of the corners of the property. The overall design of the villa was somewhat determined by the limitations of Bardolino township's building regulations. The single-story limitation prompted Scarpa to place some of the rooms in an underground volume. The villa thus responds to and cuts into the terrain, setting the stage for the conflict between the natural and the artificial, often thought to be the fundamental theme of the design.
