Description
"El Castillo, in the city of Tulum, sits on the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Tulum was occupied in the Late Postclassic period, beginning around A.D. 1200, and its small beach, surrounded by rocks, remained a safe trading hub through the 15th century. The 25-foot-tall (7.5 meters) El Castillo is visible from the water but turns its back to the sea to face the other palaces and temples in the small, three-walled city. Tulum's builders must have worked quickly and carelessly, for their work, covered up by thick coats of stucco, is not well done. The buildings are small for Maya standards." http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2007/08/maya-rise-fall/map-interactive
