The original design of the cemetery was prepared in 1845 by John Notman; Howard Daniels was then hired to revise much of Notman's plan, and Adolph Strauch proposed further changes. Strauch's concept of open, rolling cemetery grounds --called the "landscape lawn plan"--became the stylish approach to cemetery design after 1855.
