Description
Shugaku-in Rikyu was the retreat of the Emperor Gomizunoo and is one of three imperial villas in Kyoto. It was built in the northeastern mountains after his abdication in 1629. Shugaki-in was never intended to be a residential structure. Gomizunoo used it primarily for recreation. Shugaki-in includes three different villas. It is thought that Gomizunoo designed the surrounding gardens himself.
