Description
Mies van der Rohe worked with Alfred Caldwell on the original landscape design of the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. "Caldwell's landscape plan reflected the native terrain and plantings of the prairie, naturally complementing the campus grid and the spare geometry of the buildings." --www.iit.edu. Many of Caldwell's plantings remain, but others have been altered over the years. The landscape design firms of Michael Van Valkenburgh and Peter Lindsay Schaudt presented a new landscape master plan to the institute in May 1999. The first phase of the landscape master plan, the field north of Crown Hall, was completed in June 2000. They created a sunken field, placing stone benches and planting blossom trees around the field.
