Description
These buildings are Scharoun's first post-war project, which provided a distinct mixture of housing. On the west side of the site, the "Julia" building rises twelve stories high in three steps. It has a dexterous circular arrangement of the floor plan and southward orientation, demonstrating that even the larger flats are accessible via an open gallery. On the east side, the nineteen-story solitaire "Romeo" has six flats per floor that are accessible via an L-Shaped corridor lit from two sides. The most distinct exterior features are the tapered balconies and projecting roofs, which give the structures a dynamic, expressive effect. Keywords: Romeo and Juliet, Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, expressionist, apartments.
