Description

The Design for the Guangzhou Opera House considers both the opera as a new expressive icon for the city of Guangzhou and its integration in an urban strategy for the new cultural and arts square.
A loose field of urban furniture; lakes, bridges, green areas, trees and a series of small pavilions populate the ground in front of the opera lobby under a curved glass roof shell and create the lively "Peoples Plaza". Formally and programmatically the glass shell transitions from the exclusive private auditorium and lobby to the open public spaces. The urban pavilions house a variety of public programs as well as functions of the opera and are generators for local events and activities. public functions grow into the building, while the building extends itself into the public realm. - Coop Himmelblau (http://www.coop-himmelblau.at)
