Description
Part of the Seattle Art Museum (SAM), Seattle Sculpture Park was designed by Weiss/Manfredi and is located on Elliot Bay. The site was originally owned by Union Oil of California (UNOCAL)and throughout the 1990's the company implemented a series of cleanup procedures, which involved the excavation of 117,000 tons of contaminated dirt and 15,000 liters of petroleum. It was purchased by SAM and the Trust for public Land in 1999 for $16.5 million. It was a 9-acre post industrial site that has been transformed into a green space for displaying art. The new design completes the remediation process.
"The project's lead designers developed an innovative Z-shaped configuration connecting three parcels into a series of four distinct landscapes. This design afforded a wide range of environmental restoration processes, including brownfield redevelopment, salmon habitat restoration, native plantings and sustainable design strategies." - Reference
The park was largely completed by 2006 and opened to the public on January 20th, 2007.
