Description
The old jail was a panopticon (A prison so contructed that the inspector can see each of the prisoners at all times, without being seen). It was circular in plan with a central tower keep that offered views to all of the prison cells. There was a thick brick wall encircling the compound. Mathew & Ghosh Architects won a competition to redefine this 20 acre site in 2003. Their design, "Freedom Park," will include a number of public park spaces. Construction began in 2004.
