Description

Novi Beograd, or New Belgrade, is the most populous municipality within the city of Belgrade located on the left bank of the Sava River. Even though it is officially located in Syrmia, it is more often associated with Belgrade rather than with that region. With over 200 skyscrapers and 600 apartment buildings, it is considered to be a city within a city despite that until 1950, the entire area was swamp land. The Yugoslav Communist authorities stabilized the land and then developed a residential area that would showcase the aesthetic of Socialist Architecture of the time. The residential housing that was developed accommodated the explosive population growth following the World War II. This area is sub-divided into blocks and is still experiencing growth. This image was taken in 1970 by John Schooley, FAIA, during an Urban America tour. Urban America tours allowed architects and planners to visit New Towns and meet professionals involved in their planning and continued development.
