Description
In the spring of 2006, four KSA students went to North Bass Island in Lake Erie as part of a graduate landscape architecture independent study that evolved from the Winter '06 course Larch 750. Accompanied by a representative from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the students conducted site analysis and drafted a natural resource management plan for the island. The students presented their plan and research to the ODNR in May 2006. It is currently being used in conjunction with other studies to inform a comprehensive conservation plan. North Bass Island is a small 688.6-acre island located in Lake Erie. The island has roughly 16 permanent residents and remains uncommercialized due to the state's purchase of 589 acres for preservation purposes. Historically, the island was a thriving viticultural region and home to one of the most successful wineries in the US.
