Description
The Vermont capitol building was originally designed by Ammi B. Young in 1838. Most of the building was destroyed by fire in 1857. It was rebuilt by Thomas Silloway in 1859. The most significant feature of his design is the high dome covered with gold leaf. A statue of Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, stands atop the dome (by sculptor Larkin Mead), symbolizing the importance of that industry to the state.
