Description

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden opened September 10, 1988. Designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes and landscape architect Peter Rothschild, the 7.5-acre garden is divided into four large squares and a meadow area for the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture. In 1992 it was expanded from 7.5 to 11 acres, making it the largest urban sculpture garden in the country at the time. There are more than 40 works on permanent view. Michael Van Vaulkenburgh and Barbara Stauffacher Solomon won a Designer Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects for the Regis Gardens, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. The Regis Gardens run the full 164-foot length of the Cowles Conservatory's interior corridor. Jenny Holzer's 1989 'Selections From the Living Series' consists of twenty-eight white granite benches on which are engraved different aphorisms. They are arranged symmetrically around the perimeter of a square. The benches are 17 1/4 x 36 x 18 in. each.
