Description
The first of three works Le Corbusier would finish in Ahmadabad, the Mill Owners Association Building took shape in a markedly different environment than his concurrent project in Chandigarh. Whereas the capitol in Chandigarh presented the challenge of a new city, the works in Ahmadabad would enter into an already rich architectural heritage dating back to the 1400's. At Ahmadabad, it was the Sarabhai family - wealthy, philanthropic, educated, cosmopolitan - that had the vision and resources to bring in Le Corbusier. Besides the Mill Owners Association, the family commissioned two residences (Villas Shodan and Sarabhai) as well as a cultural center and museum. Keywords: India, Gujarat, Ahmadabad, Ahmedabad, Sabarmati river, mill, millowners', association headquarters, brise-soleil, ramp, sunscreen, sunshading. Submitted by Abul Quasem Abdullah.
