Description
The United States Marine Corps Memorial, also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, is dedicated to all Marines who have served since 1775. The figures at the top of the memorial depict the raising of the American flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima February 23, 1945. The base of the memorial commemorates each time Marines were called to service. The circular memorial was designed by Horace W. Peaslee, while the figures were sculpted by Felix G. De Weldon. The sculpture is cast bronze while the memorial walls are granite. The figures are 32 feet tall; the flag pole is 60 feet tall. Including the base, the full memorial is 78 feet tall. This view of the memorial is towards the east, showing the wide walking path which encompasses the memorial and enables viewing in the round.
