"The Fantasy in Almere is a housing estate that originated from a competition. The first version of the competition was announced in 1982 with the theme 'Uncommon Housing'. Designers were given all the liberties and were not limited by laws, permits and conventions. The preconceived life span was five years, thus evading the rules for 'permanent occupation'. For two plots that had remained empty a second competition was opened in 1989. The five year time-limit for occupation was now converted into a permanent status.
