The church of St. Nicholas was constructed from 1846 to 1874. It was built to replace the old cathedral which burnt down in 1842. It was delayed due to a change in style and architect. Originally Gottfried Semper won the competition with a Romanesque dome, but after the design of the Cologne cathedral was revealed, Gothic Revival became popular in Germany and George Gilber Scott was commissioned to finish the spire. The spire was the tallest in the world from 1874-76, when the Rouen Cathedral took its place. It was destroyed in World War II and now stands as a monument.
