Description
The 5.6 acre site for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels creates the third largest cathedral complex in the world, accomodating several thousand people. The materials and construction strategies were designed to withstand the California heat and up to an 8.5 earthquake on the Richter scale. Rather than using traditional glass to bring light into the chapel, Moneo utilized translucent alabaster tiles. Keywords: United States, California, Los Angeles County, ceremonial and/or religious structures, site-cast, poured-in-place, concrete construction. Submitted by Melissa Jenoff.
