Artis, the Royal Zoological Society 'Natura Artis Magistra', was founded on 1 May 1838, at the initiative of the book dealer G.F.Westerman. It is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands. This city-owned land contains an aquraium, zoological museum, geological museum, botanic gardens, planetarium, and other small exhibitions.
