Description

While redesigning the museum, Taniguchi expanded it to its pre-1984 configuration. The existing Goodwin & Stone facade has been restored as the new entrance to the film and video center; the "Bauhaus" staircase has become a connection between departmental galleries; and the 1984 Cesar Pelli Museum Tower has been integrated fully into the urban ensemble.
The Sculpture Garden is a focal point housing the installed 31 works of art from the collection. They represent a vision of modern sculpture ranging from the end of the nineteenth century to more recent times. The landscaped garden includes such celebrated works as Pablo Picasso's She-Goat (1950) and Alberto Giacometti's Tall Figure III (1960), as well as works by contemporary artists. Taniguchi reintroduces the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden as the heart of the Museum by preserving Philip Johnson's 1953 design.
